But first, There are some common misconceptions about being a makeup artist that I want to address:

MISCONCEPTION #1: Makeup artists don’t have consistent bookings, therefore no consistent pay

You may have heard this from someone who most likely doesn’t have a business card, doesn’t network, doesn’t advertise, and doesn’t “put themselves out there” in terms of selling their services. In which case, that statement would be totally true– for them. Being a makeup artist requires that you are not only artistically skilled, but that you also network and sell yourself. If you do those things I just mentioned, and you do them well, you will have clients crossing their fingers to get in your BOOK, which means making more money and having more freedom than you could have every dreamed for yourself and your business.

MISCONCEPTION #2: The field is too competitive, therefore it’s impossible for everyone to have enough work

To this I would just ask a simple question, “Are YOU like everybody else? Is your STYLE like everyone else’s? You ARE unique, right?” and since you can confidently answer YES to ALL of these questions, that only means that there is an audience that needs YOU. Your taste and style are different; you bring something unique to the table that is individual to only you. So don’t look over your shoulders at what everyone else is doing, compete with yourself and you will always win. Just develop YOUR style and individually and you will have clients who are looking for what YOU have to offer coming to you. In the creative business world, YOU are your own monopoly.

At the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night, beauty took center stage as Hollywood’s most beautiful talent (yes, the men and the women) walked the red carpet showcasing true Hollywood Beauty. RED CARPET HAIR: Go for the elegant High Chignon! To achieve an elegant high chignon, brush towel dried hair with your head tipped upside down, then secure it into a high ponytail with an elastic band. Smooth over any stray hairs with Umberto Gianni’s Sleek and Chic Seriously Straight Gloss Serum to catch any stray, flyaway hairs. Next, twist the remaining ponytail around the covered elastic to create the stylish chignon. Pin into place.

RED CARPET HAIR STYLE: Classic Waves - Create classic waves using a medium sized curling tong taking hair section by section. Push the tonged hair into soft waves and smooth any stray hairs with Curl Friends Silky Curls Smoothing Balm. Loosely gather the ends of your hair into a nape chignon and secure with pins or a hair decoration. Once you have the desired effect, spray with hairspray to keep it in shape.

Some of the best looks knock out looks on the red carpet includes understated elegance….our obsession lately has been with lip color – and we saw a lot of pink lips on the carpet last night!

The world of beauty is so fast paced. It requires that you be spontaneous for those 9pm bookings for the next morning, and it requires a constant passion for the art, the kind of passion that will drive you to stay on the cutting edge always.

Sadly though, most makeup artists who come fresh out of school have a hard time finding work. It’s like, everyone wants someone with experience. . . which is tough when you’re first starting out. Tip? Shadow an experienced makeup artist. Network your socks off. And attend as many relevant events as you can, to get your name out there. And once you get a few people to know you and refer you clients, eventually it becomes like the domino effect and bookings will starting coming out of your contacts.

Another mistake I see makeup artists make is that they refuse to promote themselves, but just expect the bookings to fall out of the sky. Reality? That doesn’t happen. If you don’t already have a website, get one (and make sure it looks nice– a tacky website reflects poorly on you!). Get on Twitter. Go to parties. Promote yourself.
